FAIRLAWN — A $3 million renovation project will begin this month at The Village of St. Edward.

According to St. Edward officials, in collaboration with C.C. Hodgson Architectural Group, which has more than 35 years of experience in senior living facility design, the firm will create a visually enticing environment for the residents in independent and assisted living.

“We want to create an aesthetically pleasing space for people,” said Elicia Gibbon, project manager at C.C. Hodgson. “This is their home.”

The six-month renovation process will feature new carpet, ceilings, lighting, millwork, furniture, artwork, a chipboard-patterned ceiling and resident doors, as well as interior apartment updates, according to St. Edward officials.

All renovation work will focus on ensuring a safe environment for residents through the utilization of low-contrast transitions, Edward officials added. Gibbon said low-contrast colors help breakup long hallways and prevent potential residential hazards due to aging eyes.

“We don’t like to use patterns that have a lot of contrast due to the yellowing of the retina and glare sensitivity that comes with age,” said Gibbon. “We don’t want a resident to perceive something on the carpet that isn’t there and fall trying to pick it up.”

C.C. Hodgson will focus its architecture on creating a home-like atmosphere designed to promote socialization and programming along with eliminating environmental stresses, said officials. “I really feel there is an impact to the spaces we create for people,” said Gibbon. “And I believe that is exactly what we are doing for the residents here at The Village of St. Edward.”
