I was born and raised in Barberton, Ohio. After graduating from Barberton High School in 2003, I attended Bowling Green State University to obtain a Bachelor of Science in Human Development and Family Studies in 2006.

In my free time, I enjoy cooking, baking, crafts, working out, playing tennis and bowling, watching Cleveland Sports and The Ohio State Buckeyes. Besides being active, I also enjoy getting together with family and friends for dinners and games. Some of my favorite places where you can find me around town are the Valley Café, Marie’s, and Ann’s Pastries, as well as the many Barberton Chicken Houses.

I’m no stranger to the area as most of my family lives in Wadsworth and I also reside in the beautiful Community of Wadsworth. I want to thank the City of Wadsworth for welcoming The Village of St. Edward.

I look forward to meeting you and your families.

INTRODUCTORY RITES

LITURGY OF THE WORD & BLESSING

A Reading from the Book of Genesis I.30 – II.4

‘God saw everything that he had made, and indeed, it was very good. And there was evening and there was morning, the sixth day.
Thus the heavens and the earth were finished and all their multitude. And on the seventh day God finished the work that he had done. So God blessed the seventh day and hallowed it, because on it God rested from all the work that he had done in creation.
These are the generations of the heavens and the earth when they were created.’

The Word of the Lord.

In the first book of the Scriptures, the earth is revealed as a gift from God our Father; It is a gift that he has given to us for our use;
And like everything in creation, it is good, it is holy, because it bears the image of the one who made it.
Today, we gather together on this precious gift of earth to build a house; To build a home for the people of God, & to care for them as we mirror the care of God for us.

We will pray that a new Sabbath of rest will be enjoyed by those who soon will gather here, and that on this land and in the Village of St Edward, we will all be prepared for a new heaven and a new earth, and will be gathered together by God forever.
This is a ground-breaking for a New Village.
GOD uses broken things to build up his Kingdom.
He uses broken soil to produce a crop and
to begin the new foundation of a house.
He uses broken clouds to give rain and
broken grain to give us bread.
It is bread broken and shared that gives us strength for the future.
And it was in the broken alabaster jar that the perfume of mercy and life was brought forth in the Gospel.

Let us pray:

Blessed are you, Lord God of all creation.
The earth you made is your gift to us.
We, your children, give you praise and thanks for this land that bears the image of your mercy and love, and supports us in our lives and endeavors.
Bless this land that will become the foundation of the new Village of St Edward in the City of Wadsworth;
May it be a house of welcome and healing,
a home of hospitality and peace,
a pledge of hope and grace;
Breathe your Spirit into our labor as we build it,
Send your grace upon all who will live and work here, and Bring this fresh beginning to the fullness of your Kingdom: in the Name of the Father  and the Son, and the Holy Spirit, now and forever.

AMEN.

The Village Celebrates with Three Centenarians! http://vsecommunities.org/the-village-celebrates-with-three-centenarians/ Tue, 29 Aug 2017 14:30:18 +0000 http://vsecommunities.org/?p=1426 The staff, residents and families of Village of St. Edward is delighted to celebrate three special birthdays! Resident Grace Shirey celebrated her 104th birthday August 29. Jane Ahern turned 100 on August 18 and Frank Mekina celebrates his 100th on September 6.
Born and raised in Akron, Grace has spent her entire life in the area. She married her husband Bill, June 20, 1936 and spent fifty-six marvelous years together. Together they raised their two children and were active in St. Paul’s Lutheran Church. Fondly known as “the cookie lady,” Grace often sent her daughter on vacation with tins of baked goods to share with their friends, sometime sending as many as six different kinds of cookies. She moved to The Village at age 90 and has befriended many residents and staff. “If I could move back to Amelia Avenue, (where she raised her family) I wouldn’t,” said Grace. “I love it here!”
Jane Ahern, also a lifetime Akronite, was born August 18, 1917. She attended Our Lady of the Elm’s calling herself, “an Elm’s girl all the way through!” Jane met her husband when she was twenty years old, fell in love, married and had eight beautiful children. Jane has enjoyed serving as a board member for the local League of Women Voters. Jane credits her successful aging to being “blessed by the Lord” and because she spent “much time hiking in parks and enjoying nature.”
Frank Mekina was born September 6, 1917 in Barberton. At sixteen, Frank quit school and joined the Civilian Conservation Corps where parts of the west building log cabins, fighting fires, branding cattle and exploring the West. He eventually returned to Akron to work for Babcock & Wilcox where he met his wife, Catherine. The two married February 14, 1941 before he went to Virginia and ultimately Pearl Harbor, Hawaii with the US Navy. He assisted in building runways on Tinian Island, the location from which B-29s carrying the atomic bombs ultimately took off. He was often adventurous, convincing several pilots to let him co-pilot or even replace a gunner for the day. Upon his return home, Frank developed a career in carpentry, built his own home and enjoyed taking Catherine to polka on the weekends. They have two daughters, Jennifer and Eileen, a grandson and twin great-grandsons. The couple was married 68 years and nine months before her death in 2010. At 100, Frank still walks five miles every morning, regularly polkas and has a glass of wine each night.
The Village of St. Edward family and friends and the greater Akron community join in celebrating with Grace, Jane and Frank and wish each of them a blessed and happy birthday!

Forever Giving, Forever Living by Vondea Sheaffer, VP of Development http://vsecommunities.org/forever-giving-forever-living-by-vondea-sheaffer-vp-of-development/ Sat, 08 Jul 2017 15:59:34 +0000 http://vsecommunities.org/?p=1403 It has been said the greatest use of life is to spend it for something that outlasts it.
While many of us say we yearn for immortality, in truth, most of us have little interest in living several extra decades- unless we can also ensure good health, mobility, mental acuity, companionship and the resources to do what we please. Instead of physically living forever, we each find other ways to be remembered. Individuals of both modest means and those with significant wealth have found ways to “live forever” through thoughtful and strategic legacy gifts.
By definition, legacy gifts are planned donations to charities that have been instrumental to you and your loved ones. These designated gifts, most commonly given through a will, allow organizations to continue future work and often personally attribute you as the donor- forever!
The Village of St. Edward is one of our community’s treasures, for more than fifty years providing a safe, faith-based home for more than 200 seniors- grandmas, grandpas, aunts, uncles, friends and neighbors who continue to fully live each day. Legacy gifts are permanent and have continued to benefit The Village and honor the donors years after the initial gifts.
Legacy gifts to The Village of St. Edward Foundation have already:
• Established the Nyeste Benevolent Care Fund to ensure no resident will ever be asked to leave The Village should they outlive their resources
• Provided for the St. Edward Chapel from the estate of Margaret Anne Brosnan
Future legacy gifts could:
• Create indoor and outdoor wheelchair accessible planters so residents can dig, plant, weed and enjoy gardening year round
• Provide painting and drawing therapy programs for residents no longer able to communicate with words
• Help residents with dementia find joy petting robotic pets and cuddling lifelike baby dolls
• Be gratefully remembered forever by naming a room, building or outdoor space at The Village of St. Edward Fairlawn campus
• Endow a named fund to ensure one-on-one spiritual care of current and future residents
• Support on and off-site educational opportunities for The Village’s nurses and caregivers
A planned gift might include gifts of cash, stocks, bonds, real estate, retirement assets, insurance policies or a combination of these, and may be of any dollar value. While it is advisable to speak to your tax, financial or legal advisor for specific questions, simple bequest language, specifying either a dollar amount or percentage of your estate, can easily be added to your will. If you have already included your favorite charity in your will, let them know so they can thank you and encourage others. If you have not yet considered a planned gift, consider the organizations you love and the ways you might be able to live- forever!
For more information about The Village of St. Edward Foundation, feel welcome to contact Vondea Sheaffer, VP of Development at (234) 466-0556.
